5. Chemistry Tuition – the route to academic success?
Does taking Chemistry tuition guarantee grade improvements?
There is no guarantee that your grades will improve by taking up Chemistry tuition. Taking Chemistry tuition does not instantaneously equate to improved results. Rather, it is an improved understanding of the subject that comes with the help of a Chemistry tutor. Students can then test their understanding of the subject doing practices, tests, and examinations and this would usually show improvements in grades as Chemistry tutors help them to better understand the complex subjects and teach them the necessary skills to answer the different types of questions. Students need a good Chemistry tutor for this, and can find the appropriate one by looking at the tutor’s credential, track-record and past students’ testimonials.
How does Chemistry tuition work?
Chemistry tuition comes in two forms- private or group classes. Depending on the type of student you are, either option could prove more appropriate. Both types of classes have their advantages and disadvantages, Group classes tend to be of lower costs and more economical to students and so appeals to many. In small groups, students still get a fair amount of attention to clarify content they may be unfamiliar with. This type of Chemistry tuition is more suitable to students with an adequate foundation of the subject already as they do not require undivided attention unlike those students seeking to learn additional concepts, may require. However, it is still highly effective as students still attain resources, additional practice, and get to discuss theories and questions with the Chemistry tutor. In addition, there is synergy in a group tuition when a solution proposes by one helps solve the question of another and vice-versa.
However, if one has the financial means, having one-to-one Chemistry tuition is deemed to be the most effective type of tuition. The reason it may not be the most popular form is because of the higher costs than group Chemistry tuition. This is why many Chemistry tutors give their students the choice of either, or even a mix of both to suit the student’s needs. In a one-to-one session, the tutee has the undivided attention of the tutor, and may clarify all his doubts and discuss further concepts. Unlike in school or a group class, the student would rarely have the opportunity to explore his areas of interest in the subject and discuss it in greater detail, which allows for a better practical understanding of the content. As such, students need to decide the trade-off between individual and group Chemistry tuition classes, before committing.
A Combined Effort
Regardless of the type of Chemistry tuition, no Chemistry tutor will guarantee your grade improvements. Why is that? Because for improvements in grades, a combined effort is required- from both tutor and tutee. A good Chemistry tutor will not just spend time to explain the content covered in the syllabus, but also provide practice questions and discuss practical applications of the subject in the real world. The practice allows a student to test his understanding of the subject consistently and familiarize themselves with the type of questions that could be asked,
Is the tuition session itself sufficient for a student’s grade improvements? This is unlikely. It is observed that most students take Chemistry tuition on a weekly basis for 1-2 hours. Outside of this time, students need to continue revising and doing practices. Without this, students may fail to recall the content covered in previous lessons, making the tuition less effective for themselves. If the students do not put in a consistent effort they may not see the fruition of the Chemistry tuition they are paying for. As such, to secure grade improvements and achieve desired results, students need to put in the effort to, in addition to their tutors.
