11. Do Singaporean students need Chemistry Tuition to ace examinations?

  • Categories Chemistry Articles

It has been observed, that a fairly large portion of students takes tuition, and in particular Chemistry tuition. This comes about as it is mandatory in certain educational systems to take Chemistry as a subject. In adddition, Chemistry is a pre-requisite for some university courses like Medicine. Chemistry is a very complex subject that involves the study of the composition of matter, its properties, and its reactions. Can a student study Chemistry on their outside of school and still ace their examinations, or do they need a Chemistry tutor for this? There is no clear answer to this as it depends on each student.

Personal Attention

Many a time, students face difficulties with the subject at school. The teacher to student ratio usually averages at about 1:30. Often, the school teachers lack the time to address each student’s needs or do not give them the full attention they need. As a result. Students have sought private Chemistry tuition to keep up with the content taught at school. Through Chemistry tuition, they have the undivided attention of their Chemistry tutor. While their class may only happen every week, much can be learned and clarified in this short period, which makes this short lesson even more effective than a week’s worth of lessons at school.

When students cannot be addressed by school teachers, Chemistry tuition can help students by giving them the boost they need to ace their examinations. Often, they would acquire sufficient understanding from lessons in school to minimally pass their tests and examinations. However, living in a competitive society, students are all driven to achieve top marks and thus seek out the best methods in doing so.

Quality of lessons at schools

Sometimes, it is not to do with the attention a student receives at school. Instead, the issue lies with the quality of lessons. Not all schools and teachers alike have the best methods of teaching Chemistry. They may not systematically teach the subject, which makes it very difficult for students to comprehend information. Further, for example, students may choose to focus too much on the theories of the subject without ever relating it to the practical side of the subject. As a result, students find examinations particularly difficult as the syllabus moves toward a practical-based approach. It is fundamental for schools and teachers to both evolve their methods of teaching in line with the syllabus. As this is not done in certain scenarios, students choose to rely on Chemistry tuition to properly understand the subject.

A good Chemistry tutor will chronologically teach his student. He will begin with the basic concepts before moving in-depth and constantly linking the theories to real-world situations so that students can visualise the applications of Chemistry.

Frequent Absenteeism

This applies particularly to students committed to active extra-curricular activity groups, for example, students playing Rugby or Football. Students involved in such activity groups tend to miss many lessons, especially during their match seasons. As a result, they tend to miss out on significant amounts of content in school and fall behind. To prevent this, some of them seek Chemistry tuition so that they can either study these topics ahead of their busy periods or can quickly catch up on the content later on, with the assistance of their Chemistry tutor. Furthermore, Chemistry tutors teach students more effectively in shorter periods, allowing some students to remain on track with their content even during their busy periods.
