4. What career prospects are there with studying Chemistry?
Why study Chemistry in the first place
Chemistry is known to be the foundation of all Sciences. If you wish to pursue the Science stream in educational institutions, it is common practice to take Chemistry as one of your choices. Some educational systems have even made it mandatory to take Chemistry as part of your curriculum, but not Physics or Biology ever. As such, Chemistry tuition is known to be lucrative, with the large supply of students finding difficulty with the subject. Why is that the case?
The study of Chemistry allows you to understand the reactions of the world, as it forms the foundations of other branches of Science. For example, with the study of Chemistry, students can appreciate the reactions and processes that take place in Physics and Biology and relate how they apply in the real world. The application of the interrelationships may not necessarily be made clear at schools as many teachers tend to teach the minimal content that is required so as to complete the syllabus in a shorter period of time. In doing so, they neglect to discuss the links between the content learnt and how it can be applied in the real world. In order to better appreciate the subject and its interrelationships with the other Sciences, students have resorted to taking up Chemistry tuition. Chemistry tutors offer personalized teaching and a good Chemistry tutor ensures that his students not only learn the basic concepts of the subject but also its practical applications. Although Chemistry tuition proves to be an additional expense, many students still take it up as they feel they do not receive sufficient attention and opportunities for discussion in school and they would never receive the same personalized lessons as they would with a Chemistry tutor.
What studying Chemistry at higher-level institutions entails
Chemistry itself is offered as a degree by many reputable universities in the world. It involves going deeper into the basics a student would have covered at school. The concept of Chemistry tuition leaves a student upon his entry to university. Here, classes are arranged as such to maximize interaction, allowing for fruitful discussions. The Chemistry degree involves diving into physical, organic, and inorganic Chemistry with some math modules to ensure students can handle physical and computational Chemistry. The course allows for plenty of research work in laboratories, allowing students to explore their particular fields of interest.
What some career choices are with a Chemistry degree
Well, a Chemistry degree can get you almost anywhere. To explain the pathway simply, you first have to first decide whether you have the intention to pursue a scientific or non-scientific career. Moving into a scientific industry can prove to be quite exciting as it gives graduates a range of choices to decide from. They could move into the chemical, healthcare, chemical engineering, and related industries. The expertise they develop from their time at university will allow them to practice their job well.
The other pathway involves pursuing a non-scientific career. But you studied Chemistry. Does that put you at a disadvantage? Truth be told the answer is actually quite the opposite. Many companies, especially those in the financial sector are now looking for science graduates over business graduates, for scientific courses such as Chemistry, equip individuals with high levels of skills such as problem-solving, analytical, critical thinking and more that put them at an advantage in various roles at such companies.
In either case, many Chemistry graduates choose to provide Chemistry tuition as a ‘weekend job’. Doing this allows them to gain additional income with the skills and expertise they have already acquired over the years, Some may even choose to become a full-time Chemistry tutor, given its potential to earn high levels of income for those who are can eventually make the mark.
